Blue
Wonder™
Gun Blue Requires the use of Blue Wonder Gun™
Cleaner - Sold Separately
Important:
Wear rubber gloves to protect hands and keep oil from getting
on the metal. DO NOT
use polishing compounds or jeweler’s rouge to polish metal prior to
bluing. DO NOT use
solvents, cleaners, degreasers, rust removers or any chemicals other
than Blue Wonder™ Gun
Cleaner to prep metal prior to
bluing. These products
can remain in the pores of the metal and interfere with the bonding
process. Blue Wonder™ Gun
Blue will only bond to ferrous metals and will not
bond to stainless steel, aluminum or case hardened
steel.
1.
Remove all factory bluing from areas to be re-blued. (Skip this step for
touch-ups or when bluing a new gun or component) This can be done using green
ScothBrite™ abrasive pads in combination with Blue
Wonder™ Gun Cleaner or other suitable methods.
Blue Wonder™ Gun Blue will not bond to
existing factory bluing, so areas should be clean, bare metal.
2. For
the best finish, the areas to be blued should be free from all pits,
scratches, etc. If necessary, smooth the areas using green
ScothBrite™ abrasive pads and/or 400 to 800 grit emery cloth.
For a higher gloss finish, the surface to be blued can be
polished. Remember, as
with ANY type of gun blue, the final finish depends upon the
preparation of the surface before bluing. The better the surface is
prepared – the better the results will be. With Blue
Wonder™ Gun Blue, you can polish the surface to a
mirror finish and it will apply evenly - without
streaking!!
3.
Remove all visible rust from areas to be blued using
Blue Wonder™ Gun Cleaner following
instructions for rust removal.
4.
Clean the entire area that is to be blued with Blue
Wonder™ Gun Cleaner to remove any oil, grease,
fingerprints, blood, etc. (See “Tips &
Techniques” section for
blood removal).
5.
Liberally apply Blue Wonder™ Gun Cleaner
gel again, to the areas to be blued, and “while the gel is on
the surface of the metal”, use a propane torch and heat the
area until it is “hot to the touch” (about 125oF
to 130oF – too hot to touch but not hot enough to cause a
burn). If a propane
torch is not available, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun. (Remove or protect wood,
plastic or composite components!) Heating the metal while the
gel is on it, draws rust particles and residue out of the
pores. Heat also
removes moisture, expands the pores and activates Blue
Wonder™ Gun Blue. This step is very important,
in order to obtain Factory Blue results!
Using a clean, dry cloth or paper towel,
wipe the hot Blue Wonder™ Gun
Cleaner off of the metal. Do not touch the cleaned
piece with your bare fingers or let it come in contact with any oil,
grease or other substance as the bluing may not bond to these
areas!
6. Immediately after wiping off
the gel and “while the metal is still hot”, apply
Blue Wonder™ Gun Blue with a soft paper
towel or cloth following the techniques below.
SHAKE – SHAKE – SHAKE the
Blue Wonder™ Gun Blue before applying it
and shake it often while applying. It contains Gold, Silver and
other micronized metals which quickly settle to the bottom.
“Saturate” a small area of a
clean, soft paper towel or cloth with Blue Wonder™ Gun
Blue liquid and apply it
liberally to the surface of the hot metal so it goes on in a heavy,
wet coating. Apply it in one direction only and do
not use pressure, trying to “rub it into the
metal”. Just apply
it very gently with even strokes, letting the hot metal absorb the
liquid. Let each coat
of gun blue dry completely before applying the next. This should only take a few
seconds if the metal is hot.
Apply as many
coats as necessary to obtain the desired darkness. Each
successive coat of Blue Wonder™ Gun Blue
will increase the darkness, (minimum of 5-6; maximum of
15-16). Blue Wonder™ Gun Blue will
not remove, harm, bond to or affect in any way, the existing factory
bluing, so for “TOUCH-UPS”, apply it to the bare area and
overlap the surrounding factory bluing, until it blends in and
matches exactly.
7. After
the final coat of bluing is dry, “saturate” a small area of a clean
paper towel or cloth with Blue Wonder™
Developer and apply it liberally to the blued
areas. Apply it gently
and do not try to “rub it into the metal”. Gently wipe off any excess
and again, do not use pressure to remove excess developer as this
may “remove” the developer.
The developer dries and sets the Blue Wonder™ Gun
Blue and brings out a deep, dark luster. Let the
piece “SET” undisturbed for 6 to 8 hours so that the gun blue and
developer have a chance to properly react with each other. Do not apply gun oil or
other substances to the blued areas during this time. After 6 to 8 hours, apply
a coat of quality gun oil such as BreakFree™ CLP or
similar. Do not use 3
in 1 oil, motor oil or other oils not specially designed for
firearms. Note: In areas of high humidity rusting
may occur before 6 to 8 hours.
In these areas you may apply oil sooner, but not sooner than
two (2) hours, as it can stop the action of the
developer. The bluing process is now complete and you
may and handle the piece as you would any factory new
gun.
Note: Instructions on the bottle say to wrap the piece in an
oiled cloth for 24 hours; however, after further testing we now
recommend that this not be done. After applying the
developer, the piece needs to “SET” undisturbed for 6 to 8
hours! If oil is
applied before this time it can stop the action of the developer and
the desired results may not be obtained. Also, we earlier stated “24
hours”, however, this time period differs depending upon the local
climate and the piece needs to be oiled 2 to 8 hours after bluing to
prevent rusting.
8. If the desired
darkness has not been obtained, clean the areas with
Blue Wonder™ Gun Cleaner to remove the
developer and re-heat them following step
5 above. Then, apply additional coats of Blue
Wonder™ Gun Blue until the desired darkness is
obtained, following steps 6 and 7.
